Can health-first cookware scale? Our journey with Cumin Co., India’s first health-first enamel cast iron cookware brand, answers that question firmly, and inspiringly. Born from the bold thesis of toxin-free kitchenware, the brand has only strengthened its health-forward credentials with a strong focus on R&D, and no less than three patents on different types of cookware coatings.

When we first backed Cumin Co., we saw a brand poised to disrupt India's INR 65,000 crore kitchenware market. The thesis was simple: consumers were evolving from "what you cook" to "how you cook," demanding toxin-free, aesthetic cookware that prioritised health without sacrificing performance. Ten months later, Cumin Co. has delivered – scaling close to 5X, with strong margins.

The first investment: Cookware so safe, even your overthinking approves

Upon meeting Niharika and Udit, what truly stood out instantly was that these were founders building for the long haul. Niharika's previous stints had armed her with great D2C brand and GTM hustle. Udit's experience in strategy and operations complemented these perfectly, while Dr. Dinesh Kumar Likhi, their R&D advisor, brought in the materials science expertise.

The trigger? Discovering non-stick flakes in their daughter's food – a moment that turned their personal pain into a mission, that of disrupting a massive kitchenware market of which 92% used risky materials.

Cumin Co. launched with a distinctive offering – their patented Enviromax™  4-layer coating, which was 100% toxin-free, retained 95% of nutrients, was optimized for India, and came with a 10-year warranty.

Time for “conscious kitchenware”

India's massive but fragmented kitchenware market is growing, with the premium segment growing at 30-40% CAGR, about twice the pace of the overall category. The narrative is now shifting from what people are eating, to how that food is prepared and the folks driving this change are none other than health-conscious urban households, which are projected to hit close to 200 million soon.

While legacy brands like Prestige and Hawkins dominate, they feel dated, and haven’t taken on the non-toxic and nutrient-retention conversation in a meaningful way. Global enamel leaders like Le Creuset remain inaccessible to most. New-age players prove demand, but no brand owned the "affordable premium health-first" sweet spot. Until Cumin Co.’s range of enamel-coated cast iron cookware.

Surpassing every milestone

In under a year from soft launch, Cumin Co. has exceeded projections on all key metrics, with strong repeat rates and consumer love. Hero products like the Dosa Tawa, the No. 10 Pan, and the Dutch Oven stand head and shoulders above competition, while new launches like the Anti-bacterial Chopping Boards are finding fans, too.

The second investment: Science as a moat

We doubled down on Cumin Co. as it achieved clear product–market fit, validating both demand and scale in a category traditionally considered hard to premiumize. In just 8 months, they have established themselves as a leader in the premium kitchenware space.

Driving this success is deep, materials-led R&D. Cumin Co.’s proprietary innovation engine is anchored by Enviromax™, a performance material engineered for Indian cooking. With three granted patents and five pending across material science, surface coating architecture, and product design, the brand has built a defensible, science-led moat in a category long driven by commoditization.

Cumin Co.’s ability to create a whole new category comes from:

  • White space ownership: Health + aesthetics at accessible premium.
  • Moats: 3 patents, international certifications, India-specific design.
  • Traction: 10X revenue growth in just 8 months, 20% repeats.
  • Scalability: Cookware full kitchen ecosystem.
  • Consumer love: "Unboxing like luxury," "Food tastes alive."

Health-first by being R&D-first

Cumin Co.'s proprietary Enviromax™  4-layer enamel delivers on luxury experience and functionality, nutrient-retention and non-toxic cookware. In addition, it offers benefits like scratch resistance, and dishwasher safety, with FDA, LFGB, and EC 1935/2004 certifications.

While R&D delivers materials advantages, deep insight makes Cumin Co. products even more attractive. Their curved roti tawa improves roti flipping, while needing 40% less oil.

Consumers deeply appreciate these products, and are vocal in their praise, describing them as: "Fit and finish like a car," "Crispy perfection," and "Veggies retain colour/nutrients."

The Fireside perspective

At Fireside, we believe that Cumin Co. captures the 21st century shift of kitchens as functional “back rooms” to visible sanctuaries of health and safety for families. Its unique R&D-led health focus has helped it own the toxin-free cookware space.

We're thrilled to compound our conviction in Niharika and Udit’s building of an iconic Indian kitchenware brand. Cumin Co. is redefining kitchens for an increasingly health-conscious India, and it’s our privilege to fuel this journey.
